On Typesets and Dan Rather, Part 6

Pt 1 Pt 2 Pt 3 Pt 4 Pt 5 Pt 6

Dan Rather has now apologized for his shoddy reporting. “Please know that nothing is more important to us than people’s trust in our ability and our commitment to report fairly and truthfully.” The fact he apologized well after the facts were known, and he couldn’t come up with any better excuse for not apologizing, he gave in. Is this what it takes to get Dan Rather to apologize? I appreciate the apology to his viewers, but for the rest of us it falls way short. He should be apologizing to Bush for intentionally smearing his reputation. He should be apologizing to those people who immediately pointed out the blatant discrepencies, rather than just calling them “pajama reporters”. He’s got a lot of apologizing left. And, being as the basis for his entire story is now debunked and discredited even by Rather, she should apologize for airing that episode. This falls way short of what he needs to be doing.
