Kerry’s Anti-terrorism Plan
Posted by Moonage on 24 Sep 2004 | Tagged as: 2004 Presidential Election
To douse the spread of terrorism, Kerry proposes policies aimed at denying individuals and groups the ability to organize and attack. Kerry would build a better military and intelligence apparatus to go after enemies, deny terrorists weapons and financing, move against worldwide terrorist havens and recruitment centers, and promote freedom and democracy in Muslim nations.
Let’s take this point by point.
1. “policies aimed at denying individuals and groups the ability to organize and attack”. Not sure how you “deny” an individual’s ability to organize. That’s been the sticking point of The Patriot Act which people keep crying “Big Brother’. And, as Timothy McVeigh proved, you don’t have to do a lot of organizing to attack. So how is Kerry proposing to deny an individual the right to organize without infringing upon our Constitutional Rights to peacably to assemble? IT has to be proven in advance that the assemble is not for the intent of being peaceful. That’s stepping on our Rights in a manner much worse than The Patriot Act and I’m sure Congress wouldn’t be too comfortable with that.
2. “Kerry would build a better military and intelligence apparatus to go after enemies”. First of all, he has to make the argument that he intends to better the military. His history of beligerance towards the military is well documented. He has voted repeatedly against military weapons. In 2002 he voted for the use of power against Iraq, but has said that was a mistake and he was misled now. He has a 30 year history of opposing the military, but now says he would build a better military. He needs to be a lot more specific on how he’s going to do that, there are too many people who don’t believe him.
3. “deny terrorists weapons and financing”. The common perception is the best job the US has done in the war on terrorism is crippling Al Qaeda financially. That is a large part of the reason they have resorted to kidnapping for ransom. Other countries have eagerly joined in the US’s efforts to destroy the funding avenues of terrorist organizations. How Kerry intends to “deny terrorists weapons” is beyond me. Fertilizer is a weapon. How is he going to deny someone in Iraq the ability to buy fertilizer, especially if he pulls our troops out and alienates their heads of state?
4. “move against worldwide terrorist havens and recruitment centers”. This one’s beautiful. This one strikes of “intervention”, which Kerry has trashed Bush on REPEATEDLY. Is he anti-intervention or not? That’s why we are in Iraq, which Kerry claims is a mistake. If he is anti-intervention, which he claims he is, how the hell is he going to “move against worldwide terrorist havens and recruitment centers”?
5. “and promote freedom and democracy in Muslim nations”. Sounds to me like he should be supporting our efforts in Iraq instead of claiming we have made a mistake being in Iraq.
These are all flip-flops. It is impossible to have it both ways.
