This is the Democrat’s worst nightmare. With all the talk of past Democrat administrations, not one ever took a chance and nominated a Hispanic to possibly the most powerful Cabinet level position. The Dems are talking a little, but even that’s tempered with the statement they don’t think they’ll oppose him. They’re screwed on this one. Ashcroft suffered from the 21st Century problem of being an average white male. With women taking shots at men, every minority taking shots at whites, Dems taking shots at Republicans, and the anti-Bushies taking shots at anything to do with Bush, I’m surprised he lasted this long. As the enforcer of The Patriot Act, people accused him of depriving them of their civil liberties ( although no one can say which one it is they lost ). He was more often called Big Brother than Mr. Ashcroft. Now, with an attractive Hispanic, all that venom is lost. This guy is smart, good-looking, and a member of a very vocal minority. The Dems can’t touch him. Jesse Jackson can’t touch him. He’s got a free pass through nomination where the Dems will only offer a token effort at "assuring we are safe". They’re not going to risk alienating one of their last remaining voting blocks.
And what makes all this SO SWEET to me?
As White House legal counsel, Gonzales practically wrote The Patriot Act.
The silence of protesting Gonzales is deafening.
