Senate Commerce Committee Chairman John McCain on Saturday threatened to introduce legislation requiring more stringent drug testing if Major League Baseball does not impose tougher rules on steroid use by January……..
I really don’t get all this. Performance enhancing drugs run the gamut anywhere from vitamins to steroids. Some things make you play better for years, some things make you play better right now, but your career won’t last as long. If these players want instant gratification at the risk of blowing their hearts out or going bonkers, it’s their decision. McCain’s not concerned if they smoke cigarettes, drink too much, or partake of an occasional toke. He’s just worried sick about them taking steroids. I have hung out with athletes for years. I have never seen one of them jealous or really worried about some other player on steroids ( they do it in high school too ). They knew generally that taking steroids may bulk someone up, but it doesn’t make them any faster or any stronger. The things any athlete does to become faster and stronger are age old practices like working out. The main use for steroids I witnessed was to kill pain so someone could play a little harder. If that’s all it does, why should we spend taxpayer money to make sure athletes don’t do it? It’s their career, if they want to destroy it, that’s their decision. If pro-baseball wants to ban and enforce it, that’s their decision. But, the one person I really don’t think has any say-so in meddling with pro-sports is Congress. Pro sports in the US is in trouble already, if you want to completely ruin it in the US, let Congress get ahold of it.
