Scandal at Camp Bucca?

Posted by Moonage on 07 Feb 2005 | Tagged as: National Politics

First, this happened:

The News reported the debauchery at Camp Bucca after receiving more than 30 photos of female G.I.s stripped to their undies and cavorting in a mud-filled pool as their male comrades in arms cheered them on.

The incident allegedly was organized by sergeants, and involved men and women assigned to guard Iraqi detainees transferred there from notorious Abu Ghraib prison, according to an Army report obtained by The News.

Investigators quoted a witness who said that sergeants involved also were lending their rooms to male and female soldiers for sex parties.

To which, we got this:

Military officials have demoted a female member of a National Guard military police unit for indecent exposure after a mud-wrestling party at the Camp Bucca detention center in Iraq.

Lt. Col. Barry Johnson, spokesman for detainee operations at the U.S. Army-run camp, did not release the name of the soldier, who lifted her shirt and showed her chest in photographs taken at the party.

The New York Daily News identified her as Deanna Allen, 19, and Allen’s mother, Ladyna Waldrop of Black Mountain, confirmed the identification.

Then, this happened:

The violence erupted at the Camp Bucca Theater Internment Facility after a routine search for contraband in one of the camp’s 10 compounds. The facility’s commander immediately deployed all available guards to the camp in an attempt to control the situation, officials said.

The riot quickly spread to three additional compounds, with detainees throwing rocks and fashioning weapons from materials inside their living areas. The four compounds involved in the riot house more than 2,900 of the camp’s 5,300 detainees.

To which no one has been reprimanded or demoted.

I think the brass was a little heavy on Miss Allen.

( Kudos to Storm for the story. I only wish I had more pictures! )

You can send them to the email here, host@moonagewebdream.com. Not sure how much space I have for that account, so it might take more than one try. It would be really interesting to me to see what all the fuss is about. Thanks.

how come everyone cares so much about this crap?? as a member of the military currently at camp bucca, i am appalled at the fact noone even cares about the events other than the mud wrestling event. not to mention they happened in oct 2004, so you guys may want to get the story strait first

Well, I don’t think you’re getting my point. So, I’ll make it a little simpler. I think the brass was a little too heavy on Miss Allen. This was a nothing event in comparison to all the other events going on in the world. Why did they choose to come down so hard on Miss Allen?

And, for what it’s worth. No pics were ever sent.

The Military Brass still have resentments over women in combat zones, not to mention homosexuals.

Their thinking is flawed at best, prejudicial at worst. This is a war zone where today may be your last so to blow off steam you treat it as your last day and live as much life as you can. The fact that women were simply doing the same thing the guys do was over the top for them.

Men cavorting naked and drunk with women was always looked at as boys will be boys. The fact that we aren’t in Europe where local women were more than happy to oblige the troops was fine. Arab women don’t have those values. (see burkka clad women and you get the drift) The fact our military women show the same bad taste as the men in uniform under extreme stress was just too much for the Brass. If all were treated the same, men and women alike, this would not be a story but the heavy handed treatment of the woman soldier only just shows how the old time brass are having problems coping with the new military. Cooler heads should prevail here and the female soldier should be repremanded the same as her male counterparts and reinstate her rank.
I doubt this situation was nearly as bad as it is made out to be. Sex is part of military life and has always been looked at as just one of those things the guys do to blow off steam, living for the moment since it really may be their last. Women should be able to do the same and this issue should just go away with a warning as it always has before. Don’t have an attitude with women, they could be just as dead in the morning and should get the blind eye treatment as has been the policy of the armed forces since forever. Guys in the brass need to get a life and worry about other things besides a wild party. They should start by confiscating the pictures from those who took them and advise those that they are hurting morale, a far greater crime in any informed persons opinion than mud wrestlin and occasional sex.

What BS … the command that Allen was in did the right thing in discipling her … the other soldiers involved in the event were in a different command, their leaders didn’t do the right thing and let all their soldiers skate … now after it hit the press, those other soldiers will be disciplined and because of the failure of leadership, failure to act, the leaders will be repremanded and their careers effectively ended.

As for the other incident, I don’t suppose it dawned on you that no one was disciplined becuase their actions were found to be justified.

wow, any one who says “sex is part of the military” is just trying to make some thing wrong seem right. in all your ignorance you will see that sex must be controlled. this is not highschool , this is not some frat, or college campus, this is the u.s armed forces. there are more ways to “blow off steam” then some whore blowing off something else. sad thing is most of them come home and kiss their mothers with that mouth. just that america has become to free with sex, till the point it is just “something to do” and thats sad. put it to you this way: if every one is getting some , why fight ? if every one his having sex, why be agressive? hence weak fighting spirit , personally the little slut deserved it, and the males should be just as ashamed. the parents of these “soldiers” should be slapped

    You’r a hoot, Sarge.

For what it’s worth, getting laid never affected my fighting spirit. If anything, it cranks me up a notch. As far as slapping the parents, their kids are(were) in Afghanistan and Iran getting shot at. I think that’s enough for the parents to deal with as it is. And lastly, no one was having sex. No one was accused of having sex. So, what’s the difference between wrestling and let’s say, karaoke?
