Al-Awda Convention, UCLA

A reader of Little Green Footballs
took pictures
and video at the Al-Awda Convention at UCLA. As Little Green Footballs
notes repeatedly, it was sparsely attended and the mood was subdued. Probably
because this isn't the Middle East. It apparently was coordinated for the
most part by the International Socialist Organization. Their webpage just
opens all kinds of worms to me:
THE INTERNATIONAL
SOCIALIST ORGANIZATION
IS DEDICATED to fighting
for a world free of all exploitation, racism and sexual oppression a society whose
productive resources are democratically owned and controlled by the working-class
majority, and where human need replaces capitalist greed. Click on one of the buttons
below or on the sides to find out more about the ISO.
The International Socialist Organization (ISO) stands in the revolutionary
tradition of Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin and Leon Trotsky. We have branches across
the country that organize activists in workplaces and communities and on
campuses in order to mobilize opposition to all forms of oppression and
exploitation. The ISO believes that capitalism produces poverty, racism, famine,
environmental catastrophe and war. By getting involved in struggles big and
small, the ISO aims to build with others a society where we all have control
over our lives. We believe another world is possible.
Sounds good enough. But then they go off on the very next page:
As the U.S. military gears up to wreak destruction
around the world, our central work is actively building a movement to stop the
U.S. government’s drive to war.
Now, they lose me here. Best I can recall, the U. S. military geared up
to wreak havoc against a greedy despot in Iraq so that the human needs of the
working class majority could be fulfilled. Seems to me they should be
supporting the U. S. soldiers instead of the insurgents who want radical Islamic
law that represses the human rights of all women and non-Muslims and doesn’t
allow anyone to have any control over their own lives. Kinda contradict
themselves don’t they?
Then,
they want justice for Palestine.
Their "justice" is the elimination of Israel. Now, it would seem to me
that in order to be an "international organization", they would want the
Israelis and Palestinians to live in harmony so that the human needs of the
working class of all the people living there would be fulfilled instead of
taking the racist position of oppressing the Israelis and not allowing them to
have any control over their own lives. Kinda contradict themselves don’t
they?
Honestly, these are clueless rebels
without a cause. I remember the angst of my youth. You’re pissed and
you don’t know why. That’s the guts of the ISO. They wanna upset
people. They want desperately to be noticed. What they don’t want is
what they are fighting for to be realized. The world would be a hell of a
lot worse off if they got what they wanted, and they would be the first to
suffer the consequences of it as they would be shot onsite for speaking up.
They know that. Therefore, in order to fulfill their childlike angst, they
fight "for" things they know will never happen. That way, they’re
guaranteed of always having something to be "fighting for".
They prove all this by not following the Socialist
agenda of Karl Marx who they cite. They are following the socialist
agenda of Adolf Hitler by espousing the elimination of Israel.
In summary, I would love nothing more
to see those idiots bring their fight to my little piece of the world.
They could do it, and it would be allowed I’m sure. But, they would be
treated like the clowns they truly are.
