Google vs Tom Delay

Posted by Moonage on 03 May 2005 | Tagged as: National Politics

This is a hoot.  First RightMarch.com noticed this:

Well, we saw that if you typed in "Tom DeLay", all of the ads were ANTI-DeLay ads. So, we took the time and spent the money so that our PRO-DeLay ad would show up too — first.

So, they did what anyone would do:

So, we copied one of the ads posted by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee almost WORD FOR WORD, but changed "Tom DeLay" (the GOP leader) to "Nancy Pelosi" (the Democrat leader, who violated ethics rules much worse than what DeLay is accused of).

That’s all we did — we took the LIBERAL ad, and changed the words to make it a CONSERVATIVE ad.

Pretty clever I thought.  And, this is the response they got from Google:

"Google policy does not permit ad text that advocates against an individual, group or organization."

What a RIOT!

I decided to test their accusation.  I ran a search on my own webpage using Google.  These are the ads google ran at the top of the page:

Those first two sure look like "ad text that advocates against an individual".

Whatsayou Google?

!!!   UPDATE   !!!

From

Google.blognews
:

Asked about the nearly identical ads, Mayzel ( of Google ) said, "Both ads
were taken down. Any assertion to the contrary is false."

The problem was not the ads per se, but the practice.  It hasn’t
stopped.  The blog’s suggestion that Google not mess with political ads is
dead on.
