Sandra Day O’Connor Retires

Justice Sandra Day O€™Connor, the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court and a key swing vote on issues such as abortion and the death penalty, said Friday she is retiring.

O€™Connor, 75, said she will leave before the start of the court€™s next term in October, or when the Senate confirms her successor. There was no immediate word from the White House on who might be nominated to replace O€™Connor.

I’m going to miss her.  Most of the judges you could pretty much guess how they were going to vote.  But not with Justice O’Connor.  More often than not, she was the one everyone kept their eye on.  That’s how I like to think people view me.

There will be a political blood bath over her replacement.  Although considered conservative by some, she was a swing vote.  More often than not ( gut feeling, no fact checking on this ), she did side with the conservative view ( strict interpretation ).  In order to solidify the chance of any conservative issues being favorably reviewed, the conservatives will HAVE to replace her with a conservative.  In order for the liberals to have any chance, they will HAVE to get a liberal on the court. There is no way either side can take a pass.  There really is no way either side can negotiate.  This will be exciting to watch.
