Schroeder loses confidence vote

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder lost a confidence vote in parliament Friday, opening the door for possible new elections.

The confidence motion garnered 151 votes, short of the 301 votes needed as members of Schroeder’s own Social Democrat party obeyed his request to abstain.

The article goes on to say that Schroeder is apparently losing support in his country and trails in polls.  Now, I’m not a person that gets too terribly excited about any poll, but, none of the Germans I know care too much for his leadership.  Granted, that’s not too many Germans.  However, I do hope this is accurate.  Schroeder hasn’t been much of a friend to the US.  When we needed Germany most, he bailed on us and instead incited the terrorists by very vocally opposing the US’s efforts to rid Iraq and the world of Hussein.  There was no logical reason for Schroeder to do that.  He might not have supported military action, but that didn’t require him to go over the top in his criticism of Bush and the US.  He’s strained his relations with the US I’m sure.  Germany had a lot more to lose with a destabilized Iraq than the US.  They are helping some now in Iraq, but not near enough.  I could go on trashing Schroeder due to Germany’s economy and other issues, but that’s not my dog in this fight.  That’s up to the German people to figure out.  However, that one dog I do have, his udermining our efforts in Iraq, is a big one.  I hope they call an election.  I hope he loses.  Even if the new Chancellor does not support the US military action, I hope he can see clearly enough to keep it to himself and help the Iraqi people.  Iraq is a potential economic gold mine.  Germany, and most European countries, have an economic opportunity in Iraq.  This is not the time for Germany to be closing doors.
