The bane of being physically fit
Posted by Moonage on 03 Aug 2005 | Tagged as: National Politics
This has got to be the strangest political strategy I have ever seen in my life, bar none. The Democrats are attacking President Bush for being physically fit. I kid you not:
The Rate Of Childhood Obesity Has Skyrocketed In Recent Years. The rate of childhood obesity has skyrocketed in recent years, and more than 9 million children over age 6 are now considered overweight. The rapid rise has alarmed public health experts, because overweight children are far more likely to develop health problems. Currently, the U.S. government estimates that 30 percent of the nation’s kids are overweight or on their way to being too heavy. Nearly twice as many children and three times as many teens are overweight now compared to two decades ago. (Washington Post, 10/1/04; USA Today, 6/4/04; Greensboro News & Record, 3/21/04)
I am flabbergasted. Of course, some people have responded that maybe it’s better to lead by example:
Now, what good does it do spending a billion dollars if you’re not going to lead by example? Kids do what they see, not what they’re told.
Regardless, this is the most inane attempt at grandstanding I think I’ve ever seen the DNC resort to.
If you can think of better ones, post a comment.

Maybe the Liberals should rethink their glorious ban on dodgeball.

Just ’cause Moon can eat anything he wants and still loses weight, doesn’t mean that obesity is restricted to “Democrats” (oops, you said “liberals”). Remember, Moon is still young and age hasn’t slowed down his metabolism yet.
Take it from me, just 8 years ago I was more active than I am today, and was about 50 pounds lighter…”hey, give me that cheeseburger!”
I was one of the kids in school who avoided being the target during our dodgeball games. The gym teacher was a masocist who usually divided the class between the school bullies and the smarter kids…I was usually teamed with the smarter kids and scored a few bullies’ heads now and then…but I was essentially “protected” from the hoods (as we called them) ’cause of my Varsity Club jacket having earned the first of my varsity letters in soccer during my first two months in the school.
I can think of a few Republicans that I’d like to see across the gym floor during a “friendly” game of over-50 dodgeball…and I am a Republican.

We are talking about kids here and not adults. This is not a Republican or Democrat issue. This is obesity in children starting the tracking process at age 6. I doubt any of these little porkers are affiliated with any political party. My point about dodgeball in particular and sports in general is that the Liberals despise these activities because there are winners and losers. They can not tolerate the emotional distress placed on children because they lost a game of whatever. Title IX is another misguided idea from the left in the name of equal protection/rights in athletics. The problem is that there are far more men than women who choose to participate in sports. There are more women than men enrolled in college. The formula used is based on student ratio instead of student athlete ratio. I support womens sports and enjoy watching them. Women should have the ability to fully participate in any sport they wish. The problem is that women are less inclined to do so. Since women play less sports, men have to eliminate sports they would like to play because there isn’t enough womens teams to fit the title IX formula. That is inherently wrong and should be changed so men are not penalized because women simply do not wish to participate in sports at the same rate as men. Granted a lot of people would rather do something else besides take gym class but the result is that we have raised a generation of obese children that are no longer emotionally scarred by loosing a game. The Liberals are insane about these issues and the courts are just as bad. I blame the obesity problem more on the ACLU than McDonalds and any sane person who actually analyzes the facts will come to the same conclusion.
