Banning NCAA Mascots?

Posted by Moonage on 07 Aug 2005 | Tagged as: Political Correctness

Fed up with what it considers "hostile" and "abusive" American Indian nicknames, the NCAA announced Friday it would shut those words and images out of postseason tournaments, a move that left some school officials angry and threatening legal action.

Starting in February, any school with a nickname or logo considered racially or ethnically "hostile" or "abusive" by the NCAA would be prohibited from using them in postseason events. Mascots will not be allowed to perform at tournament games, and band members and cheerleaders will also be barred from using American Indians on their uniforms beginning in 2008.…..

The committee also recommended that schools follow the examples of Wisconsin and Iowa by refusing to schedule contests against schools that use American Indian nicknames……

Those schools will not be permitted to host future NCAA tournament games, and if events have already been awarded to those sites, the school must cover any logos or nicknames that appear.

At Florida State, Wetherell said the NCAA was trying to embarrass the school for using its nickname, even though the Seminole Tribe of Florida has given the university permission to continue using it.

The beauty of all this is that there is nothing the NCAA can do about football teams mascots because they have no tournament.  Maybe this will be the impetus for them to actually get one.  Rather than doing it for what’s best for football, they can justify it with being politically correct.  That would be fine with me.

Now, to the inane, this is the list of offensive mascots:

  • Alcorn State University (Braves)
  • Central Michigan University (Chippewas)
  • Catawba College (Indians)
  • Florida State University (Seminoles)
  • Midwestern State University (Indians)
  • University of Utah (Utes)
  • Indiana University-Pennsylvania (Indians)
  • Carthage College (Redmen)
  • Bradley University (Braves)
  • Arkansas State University (Indians)
  • Chowan College (Braves)
  • University of Illinois-Champaign (Illini)
  • University of Louisiana-Monroe (Indians)
  • McMurry University (Indians)
  • Mississippi College (Choctaws)
  • Newberry College (Indians)
  • University of North Dakota (Fighting Sioux)
  • Southeastern Oklahoma State University (Savages)

Here’s a list of those that have already become politically sterilized:

  • California State-Stanislaus University
  • Lycoming College
  • Winona State University
  • Hawaii-Manoa University
  • Eastern Connecticut State University
  • East Stroudsburg University
  • Husson College
  • Merrimack College
  • Southeast Missouri State University
  • State University of West Georgia
  • Stonehill College
  • San Diego State University
  • Wisconsin Lutheran College
  • University of North Carolina-Pembroke.

The one racially specific school I expected to see on the list was surprisingly omitted.  The Notre Dame Fighting Irish.  I take offense that my heritage is being portrayed by a physically deformed ( super large head ) red head brute and that my geneology is incorrectly labeled as a bunch of fighters.  I mean, look at this:

What decent Irishman would feel flattered being portrayed like that?

For the NCAA to single out ONE race and protect them while ignoring all the other races is just hypocracy and racism.  The NCAA is broken.  It don’t need fixing, it needs to be replaced.

Couple of seasons ago, a longtime NY City (sometimes) powerhouse NCAA basketball program, St. Johns University, buckled under to the coming trend and renamed their team the Red Storm, replacing “Redmen.” Now I suppose they could have named themselves the “Saints” and sometimes, they were referred to as the “Johnnies” but…Red Storm???

Just trying to gain the same respect as the Crimson Tide maybe?

I don’t know what a Red Storm is. Guess that makes it politically correct.

Speaking of Crimson Tide, there was a time when a fraternity at The University of Auburn was put in serious jeopardy of losing it’s charter for their display in front of their chapter house before the annual matchup between schools, of a huge box of Kotex and a banner that said “Stop the Crimson Tide”. Now that is offensive and they University of Alabama should be prohibited from using the nickname on their uniforms. Incidently both Auburn and Alabama are the names of Indian tribes, and consequently should be banned from being displayed on their school’s uniforms.

Excellent point on the origins of Auburn and Alabama! For that matter, Kentucky is an Indian reference as well. I’m quite sure Tennessee is as well. Ohio was an Indian tribe as well. As I am sure quite a few other states are. I’ll have to do a survey and come up with them all, this is TOO interesting! Thanks for the post!

Arkasas comes from the Illinois Indian’s word for the Quapaw Indians. As indicated by recordings of Marquette and Joliet who were early French explorers of the Mississippi River.

I wonder what would happen if the BCS class schools just decided enough was enough, left the NCAA and negotiated their own TV and Bowl deals, especially one that included a playoff.

Same for Basketball(both men & women) baseball and softball. These are clearly the money sports.

I would think that the NCAA getting it’s wings clipped in such a manner will give this Academia Elitest group first hand knowledge of the real world when they are broke and powerless to infringe on others in a manner that is grossly abusive.
