THe first Katrina aftermath Polls

Posted by Moonage on 04 Sep 2005 | Tagged as: Katrina

Why am I the least bit surprised that people are already running polls?

Things aren’t as bas as I expected tho:

Yes No
Federal government adequately prepared? 31% 67%
State/local government adequately prepared? 24 75
Blame Bush? 44 55

Given all the rhetoric, I’m really surprised a 20% majority seem to realize where the responsibility lies.  That’s a good thing.  My concern is that if people misplace the initial responsibility, this could happen again.  It is up to the LOCAL government to get their people and assure their safety, it’s up to FEMA to clean up the mess.  Regardless of what Nagin says.

As I’ve written, I’m going to let Congress place blame after deliberation (I realize that everyone is already casting blame, but I don’t really think that I have, nor do I want to do so).

Instead, I want to examine the implications of the overall planning/preparation and response to this natural disaster, and what it means to a possible future terrorist attack.

Think about it, supposedly what caused all this was two barges crashing into the levees. Now, I’m all for analyzing the hell out this disaster, but some problems are blatantly obvious to me. Now, the nature of FEMA is not to go into every location in the country and assess things from scratch, it is to assist local government in doing the assessing. If the local people are so oblivious to blatantly obvious problems, we’ve got a LOT to worry about in regards to a terrorist attack.

Yes, you are right. FEMA is not “first response” at all and most people do not understand that. But as you and I both know, so much of the emphasis at DHS has been on first responder activities…if New Orleans fumbled this ball so badly…and if one of the apparent problems was the lack of communications systems, just what does this mean regarding other areas of the country?

Where has all of this money gone (and I’m not referring to the UASI and first responder funds in New Orleans). I’m looking for an accountability for all of the money that has gone to all of the major cities, and would like to know what the money has been used for. Drills? Equipment?

In our neck of the woods, first responder money has gone directly to the local emergency infrastructure such as fire, EMT, and nursing agencies and such. In the case of NO, this seems to have been wasted. It serves no purpose training fire and medical responders if the local government doesn’t know what to do.

I think the next time something like this happens, the president just needs to declare marshall law and take it over ASAP. Then we can get a true taste of what that DHS money has gone to.
