Democrat empathy?

This was the Democrat’s response to the President’s speech last night via Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid:
"The President offered comforting words tonight, but the victims of Hurricane Katrina don’t need just words, they need a plan that will lead the way in recovery, rebuilding, and renewal. We cannot change the past for the victims, but we can change their future and this unprecedented national disaster demands an unprecedented national response. It will take more than dollars to rebuild communities and that’s why we have offered a Marshall Plan to help families get back on their feet, back into homes, and back on the job.
"It takes more than just taking responsibility to right the many wrongs that occurred over the past two weeks. The American people need answers from independent experts outside of the political arena to learn from the past and prepare and protect our nation and our communities for the future. We can and must do better.
"This region of our nation deserves our support, our cooperation, and our sympathy. We are concerned by Bush Administration initiatives this week waiving wage protections, environmental safeguards, and protections for veterans, minorities, women, and the disabled. The Gulf Coast region does not deserve to be treated as a laboratory for political opportunism or ideological experimentation. Now is the time for unity. It is a source of sorrow to our nation that so many were left behind as the waters rose. We must now commit that none will be left behind as the waters recede."
OK, here we go:
- The people of the coast do need comforting words. It was cheap and crass to disparage Bush’s words of comfort.
- What is she talking about with the "more than dollars" comment? Bush has sent in every agency known to man, people have come in from far away countries. Sheez, Bush has even told faith-based programs to send more volunteers. Now, if that’s not what Pelosi had in mind, I’ll remind her once again that rebuilding New Orleans will be done primarily by the people of New Orleans. I don’t think they have in mind letting Nancy Pelosi tell them how to do it.
- Taking a slap at Bush for "taking responsibility" is cheap and no one will buy it. He did the right thing by accepting responsibility, no one is going to criticize him for that. Nancy and Harry just make themselves look cheap by attacking that comment. For them, and their party, that part was best left alone. They don’t have the political sense to realize that. That makes them sound shrill. People don’t vote a lot for shrill people.
- What initiatives are she talking about? There will be some exemptions made by the EPA to get the water out. Now, what Nancy is proposing here is that she is concerned about the environment of New Orleans. If she truly is, then the water will stay in New Orleans so they can satisfy typical EPA sewage discharge requirements. She then goes right into "The Gulf Coast region does not deserve to be treated as a laboratory for political opportunism or ideological experimentation. Now is the time for unity." She feels the Gulf Coast deserves our sorrow while criticizing someone for showing sympathy and care, says it’s not time to for political opportunism while citing several political issues and cites her support in the form of passing a funding bill while saying money is not enough.
- And, we should all show unity. Problem here Nancy, how can we be united if you and Harry have stated on national tv you’re not going to support the President’s initiatives? You’ve told us you’re not going to be united, so why should we try?
Is it just me, or does this sound like possibly the worst rebuttal the Democrats could have given?
I’ve got news for the Dems, Bush’s ratings would be in the 20’s if they had one appealing person in charge.
Just one.

Why are people blaming Bush,Sr. and Bush,Jr. for the levee construction?Bill Clinton was president between these two men.If Bill Clinton was so concerned about economically, disadvantaged people why did he not initiate and complete construction on the levee system. We do not blame anyone but attribute Hurricane Katrina as a natural disaster, but we can point fingers too.In our town the local government, the state government and then the Federal government take charge. If the mayor and governor knew a disaster this huge was going to take place why did they not put money into correcting the problem along with making known the plight of the people who lived there? The churches certainly moved rapidly to aid New Orleans. We are a poor community in Newport,Tennessee and we might add “white”.We have always felt the North was biased against the South and definitely the news media is prejudiced against George Bush.

I pointed out in another post that the debate over how to deal with the
flooding in New Orleans dates back to around 1882:

Understanding that, I sometimes take it for granted that everyone understands
how inane that accusation is. Once anyone understands the inanity of the
accusation, then race or economic situation becomes moot.
