Harriet Ellan Miers

It’s Harriet Ellan Miers. The response I’ve gotten from people I respect is "who is she?". The most general response is "George’s friend". The consrevative Redstate.org is really down on her:
Diversity. Sure she does. In fact, she gives money to Republicans *and* Democrats.
People are already jumping all over the fact that Ms. Miers donated to Al Gore, Lloyd Benson, and the DNC in 1988. That’s right, she helped the other side against George Bush the elder. Around 1994 it seems she got right.
Some people are shocked, SHOCKED I tell ya. I’m not. George has always worked from a very tight circle of trust and comfort. I think given George’s druthers, he would have nominated Gonzalez. Given Laura’s pressure, and I’m sure a little prodding from Kay Bailey Hutchison, George went with replacing Sandra Day O’Conner with a woman. That’s not a bad thing. But, this may not be the best choice to do it with. The Democrats have been looking for someone, anyone, to crucify during this process. Harriet Ellan Miers may be the one. Some people are dismissing the Democrats’ ability to do that given her no-history of decisions. I don’t dismiss the Democrats that easily. She’ll be painted as a Bush crony. And, most likely, rightfully so. George may have laid an egg on this one.

Maybe, maybe not. If in fact the Libs defeat this nomination, W simply nominates Janice Rogers Brown stating to the American Public that this nominee isn’t controversial because she was just approved a few short months ago by this very Senate. What would the Libs do then? Hard to stonewall a Woman of Color who just went thru the approval process. I think the Libs will be well advised to approve Miers or face the real possibility of a very Conservative Constitutionalist in Ms. Brown.

I think Janice Rogers Brown is exactly why the Libs won’t push this one too hard. Meirs isn’t being received overwhelmingly by the public or the press. I think a lot of pundits were expecting Brown. If the LIbs shoot down Meirs, Bush gets a second shot at nominating someone more popular. Plus, I don’t think the Ted Kennedys will be quite so eager to attack a “minority”. If Bush does get a second shot at it, and does nominate Brown, then the Libs are dead in the water and they know it.
Ms. Meirs will be confirmed. If nothing else, to keep Bush’s “mistake” in public view.

BTW, I wouldn’t read too much into the Benson/Gore donation. As far back as I can remember, Texas was ALL Democrats of the Conservative persuasion. For lack of a better term we will call them LBJ Democrats. LLoyd Benson was an extremely powerful Conservative Democrat from Texas and it would be a real bad political move not to support him. The fact of the matter is she never changed as you stated around 1994, rather, the Democratic Party left her as well as all the Regan Democrats. That is when you will find that Texans changed Political Affiliation in droves as did most of the South. I do not think Bush would hire his personal lawyer if they were of the Liberal persuasion nor should any of the Conservative Party members. A little research into what happened when sheds an entirely different light on the campaign contributions she made and we should take note of that fact. Personally, I hope the Libs do crucify her as a Bush cronie so W can nominate Judge Brown for the proverbial game, set, match on the Supreme Court though I think she will get thru in a firestorm much like Thomas but without the sexual allegations in the personal attacks.
