Melvin Watt

The chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus on Friday urged his Capitol Hill colleagues to extend and strengthen the Voting Rights Act in order to "level the playing field" because, U.S. Rep. Melvin Watt said, "white people … will not consider voting for an African American candidate."
Watt, a Democrat from North Carolina, made the remarks at a Washington hearing held by the National Commission on the Voting Rights Act. The commission, a project of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, is conducting nationwide hearings to gather data on voter discrimination for a report it will issue supporting the extension of the Voting Rights Act.
Watt told Cybercast News Service that his views are based on a 1980s blind poll of North Carolinians, which he said revealed that 30 percent of whites would not vote for a black candidate under any circumstances.
Watt told the commission that if another poll were conducted today, "there would be a substantial majority of white voters who would say that under no circumstances would they vote for an African American candidate." He later amended his comments, allowing that "some of them would."
The number of white Americans who would refuse to vote for a minority candidate is "decreasing," Watt conceded, but he maintained that the Voting Rights Act should "adjust districts to take [racially motivated voting] into account."
This man is dangerously stupid. Should we then factor out all the black people that won’t vote for a Latino? Should we then factor out all the Latinos that would never vote for an Asian? Should we then factor out all the Asians that would never vote for a Middle Easterner? Should we then factor out all the Middle Easterners that would never vote for a Jew? Should we then factor out all the Southern Baptists and Catholics that would never vote for a Muslem? Should we then factor out all the males that would never vote for a female? Should we then factor out all the females that would never vote for a male? Should we then factor out all the heteros that would never vote for a gay?
Get the picture yet Mel?
What we’re shooting for here is equality for all races, not more justification to keep discrimination going. Every candidate has their cross to bear. Some are black, some are too white, some have ugly smiles and can’t hug a baby, some are fat, some have scars, some can’t speak well in public. You just have to rise above your perceived limitations and convince one more person than your challenger to vote for you. That’s all. Using the force of the government to eliminate your perceived challengers is well, so cliched. That’s sad Mel, very sad. You’d think Mel more than most would understand what eliminating someone’s right to vote because of their color did to this country before.
And lastly, Mel, your district is mostly white. I think you owe more than "some" an apology.

This man is no only stupid but dangerous. He also happens to be factually wrong.
I consider myself a staunch Conservative Republican, therefore according to Melvin Watt I would never vote for a Minority.
Melvin, wake the #^@% up and realize we aren’t voting against blacks because they are black but rather that they are generally of the extreme Liberal Democratic persuasion such as yourself.
I personally have championed the cause of Dr. Rice to run for President in 2008 simply because I feel she is the BEST person for the job and race or gender never were part of the equation.
You are a misguided person in need of therapy at the least and a very dangerous person at worst. Somewhere in the middle you need to look at your comments and realize just how stupid/dangerous they really are.
