Hillary’s Plantation?

Posted by Moonage on 17 Jan 2006 | Tagged as: 2008 Presidential Race

Hillary Clinton, speaking to a mostly black audience at Canaan Baptist Church of Christ in Harlem had this to say:

The House €śhas been run like a plantation, and you know what I€™m talking about,€ť

Is it me or does that sound like a racial stereotype of the worst kind?  Would she have said that at MY Baptist church, which is about 99% white?  I mean, none of us know what living on or running a plantation is like.  We never had those here.  For that matter, I don’t recall that many plantations ever existing in Harlem, NY, especially in the last 50 years or so.  So, she’s got to be assuming her audience knows what being on a plantation is like for some other reason.  Wonder what it is?

Here’s what a few people who should know what she’s talking about had to say:

Apparently the people at Canaan can’t even see the irony of them being so blinded by a slap at Bush that they couldn’t see that they were humiliated and denegrated nationwide by a prossible president of their country.

On behalf of those that have never experienced life on a plantation, I find Hillary’s comment insulting and embarassing.  On behalf of my country, people need to realize how desperately she’ll pander to any constituency that comes her way.  That’s what Bill did as well.  That’s why we’re in the messes we’re in now no matter how desperately she keeps blaming it on Bush and panders to those that believe her.

Vote Condi!

What you won’t see a lot of on Ray Nagin

Ray Nagin, the idiot mayor of New Orleans, who I have trashed repeatedly here, yesterday made some comments on the comments he made Monday. Those original comments asserted God was mad at the US for allowing the UN to drag

It was a pretty terrible comment. It might have been better if it had made some sort of sense, but it just didn’t work. No one knew what she meant. There aren’t any plantation workers in the house of representatives. There aren’t any slaves.

All Hillary did was bring up a rather terrible part
of America’s past. It’s just as if she’d said “Hey, you guys used to be on a plantation.”

Nice comment Miranda. And yeah, I agree. But, the point I was getting as is why did she feel compelled to use a plantation as her example? Is it because she personally knows what it’s like living in a plantation? I doubt it, she’s from Chicago, they didn’t have plantations there. Especially not in her lifetime. It’s because she felt compelled to identify with her perceived crowd. A crowd she perceived as knowing what plantation life is like ( although none of them could since there were never any plantations in New York City, ever. ) If she had perceived her crowd as being every-day run-of-the-mill hard working Americans, she wouldn’t have felt compelled to come up with something to bond with them. It’s a Freudian slip that should have been caught by her speech writers. That’s racism whether it’s overt and intentional or not. None of her crowd has ever experienced plantation life. None of them have even experienced slavery. Every single one of them have experienced racism. If they had never before, they did when Hillary gave her speech. The problem I have is the crowd didn’t even see it as racism. From what I’ve read, they applauded. It didn’t bother them that they were blittled so long as the person doing the belittling was using it to attack something they didn’t like. That’s a big problem IMO. The second problem I had was other than Fox ( expected ), not too much of the media called Hillary for what she was. That’s media bias in the worst way. Every commentor on CNN, MSNBC, etc.. should have been lambasting Hillary in a much worse way than they did Trent Lott, but most looked the other way. That’s an even bigger problem IMO, the public whipping post looks the other way so long as it’s someone they like ( granted Fox will do it on the side as well ). And, Nagin showed the other side of the issue. Some media looked the other way as well for him. Racism cuts many ways. People who exhibit it need to be called to task equally. Until they are, this will remain a divided country because of it. And, that ain’t Bush’s fault.
