Coretta Scott King

The funeral for Coretta Scott King embarrassed me. It truly, deeply, did. Joseph Lowery and Jimmy Carter preaching personal politics about Bush had NOTHING to do with Coretta Scott King. What were they thinking? How would they feel if I gave a eulogy at THEIR funeral that focused on MY personal politics?
Embarrassing. Truly embarrassing.
Some people are comparing this to the Paul Wellstone funeral. But, at least Wellstone was a politician. Carter and Lowery were totally out of place to preach partisan politics at Coretta’s funeral. They should be embarrassed, and, I don’t know anything about Lowery, but what I have been told of Carter, he should be man enough to know he was out of place and apologize.

I only heard Coretta Scott King speak once, when I was a college student. I went and was excited to have the opportunity to hear her speak. Unfortunately, I was so deeply disappointed by what I heard that I wound up walking out of the room. I had the impression that she no longer stood for what Martin Luther King, Jr. stood for. That aside, funerals are not the place for personal politics as you rightly observe. They are not a time for agreement or disagreement. They are a time for honoring the deceased’s achievements, which in this case were undoubtedly many.

Undoubtedly they were. I never followed her. I truly didn’t even know her politics or social agenda. And, given her funeral, I still don’t. I do know Lowery’s, Carter’s, and Kennedy’s, but I know no more about Coretta than I did before. And, since they made it a political event instead of a funeral, all the media is discussing what THEY did and not Coretta’s life. Pathetic.
