Ashley Miller and most of the UW Student Senate

“…many monuments at UW already commemorate rich white men.” Thus spoke University of Washington Student Senate member Ashley Miller. The conversation was referring to this guy:
He’s Native American. See those airplanes in the background? He’s possibly the greatest pilot to ever sit in one of those cockpits. He was held captive and tortured during WWII. None of that mattered to Ashley Miller. She didn’t bother to research one iota about Pappy Boyington. She let her anti-war blinders get in the way and made that incredibly stupid and biased comment. If Pappy were still around I’d welcome him to my world. As it stands now, the heat has gotten to the Senate body and they are trying to dig their way out of it by figuring some way to honor all veterans of combat generically. That doesn’t cut it. Pappy was the best at what he did. Not too many Washington alum can make that claim. Not too many alum from anywhere can make that claim. There’s no need to sterilize his memory. He was great. He alone deserves to be remembered and celebrated for being the best at what he did. Just because some young girl who doesn’t care to explore the issue wants to make a political statement doesn’t lessen the fact that Pappy was great at what he did. And, the political statement that Ashley is trying to make is the one she doesn’t get. If it weren’t for the Pappy’s, she wouldn’t be allowed to publicly display how stupid she really is. Get a clue Ashley, start by apologizing to the Native Americans as well as the average white males. Then, read some history. They obviously don’t teach it very well at the University of Washington. If she can’t find the library, try watching tv:
Plot Synopsis: Pappy Boyington is the squadron-leader of a group of fighter pilots stationed on an island in the Pacific, during World War II. Pappy often needs to intercede in altercations at the base, but everyone seems to pull together when they are assigned missions in the air.
Or, if you’d prefer, read his book:
Just read something besides Salon.com. It’s making you stupid.

Even worse, Ashley Miller is the Vice President of UW’s Student Senate. Additionally, you missed Jill Edward’s comments at the same meeting, saying she “didn’t believe a member of the Marine Corps was an example of the sort of person UW wanted to produce.” See http://www.AnklebitingPundits.com . Both of these girls - and I intentionally use that word - have failed miserably and should not have been allowed to graduate from high school. How you graduate from high school without knowing who Pappy Boyington was is beyond me. Rich? I suspect that neither of them have ever known the kind of poverty that Boyington came from. White? Only partly so. And who cares anyway? Aren’t we supposed to be living in a color blind world now?! And what’s wrong with honoring the Marines? They fight for our freedoms, which includes the freedom that Jill Edwards has to open her mouth and bray.

I didn’t miss Jill’s words, however, she makes a point that holds some water. Not wanting to honor Boyington because they have enough rich white men just struck me as being an absolutely crystal clear example of how clueless these girls are. I totally disagree with their position on Marines as well. But, since they are obviously so clueless, it doesn’t really matter what her position on the Marines is.
And yeah, UofW can do a LOT better than what they have. When I was in college, we elected Gumby president of our student body in protest. So, doing dumb things is sort of a college rite. However, in our case, we were quickly informed of how dumb our stunt was and the stunt was “corrected”. These girls just need to “correcting”. If UofW is not going to do it, then we need to let them know they don’t exist in a coccoon(sp?).
And, given that basically a majority of the senate went along with these clueless girls, they need to get the same message.
Dumb, kids, very very dumb.
If nothing else, they should recognize the fact that people like Boyington are the reason they have the ability to publicly display their stupidity without fear of recourse. I know that’s a tough pill for some to swallow, but if they’re going to be involved in government, they’ll have to accept that fact eventually.
