Ports and the UAE

Haven’t blogged much here for a few days.  Been kinda busy.  But, this ports deal is getting on my nerves.  First of all, the Democrats are making this their lightning rod on the security issue.  Every single day I hear some Democrat talking about how Bush is compromising security by selling out or port security to a foreign country.  Facts here folks that the media is trying desperately to avoid:

  • THE PORTS WERE ALREADY MANAGED BY A FOREIGN COUNTRY WITH TERRORIST TIES.  That deal was made by a Democrat in 1998.
  • The only thing that is changing is the foreign country.  A lot has been made about the fact UAE had terrorist ties BEFORE 9/11.  Fact is, the country we’re doing business now with sent us a terrorist AFTER 9/11.
  • Fact is, THIS ISN’T ABOUT SECURITY.  Never was, still isn’t.  It’s about coordinating ships coming in and out of these ports.  We’re still responsible for making sure the cargo is safe.  Always was, always will be.
  • The primary person doing the bitching is Hillary Clinton.  The person responsible for advising Dubai on how to get this deal done, Bill Clinton.  The person who originally okayed allowing a foriegn country with terrorist ties to manage the person was Bill Clinton.  Where’s the outcry over both Clintons’ conflict of interest?  Why wasn’t her association with someone trying to undermine the security of the country ever an issue, but the result of that person undermining the country’s security someone else’s issue?  The media should be ripping the Clintons to shreds over this issue.  But, they’re not.  Why is that?
  • Most people who know think this is a good deal.  The media’s not going out of their way to give these people a say, but are putting someone on every single day talking about how the Republicans have sold out the US security.
  • Why do those people think this is a good deal?  Because it helps keep a fragile government fighting terrorism in power whereas the status quo does nothing.  And, since it doesn’t affect security, why not?
