Bush’s speech on immigration

Here is the transcript of Bush’s speech last night:

Good evening my fellow Americans, and those of you from other lands who are pursuing U.S. citizenship legally. Tonight I€™ve come to praise immigration, not to bury it.

This nation was built through the blood and toil of restless refugees yearning to breathe free. Our canvas has been painted in a thousand shades of humanity. Our national language reverberates with the sweet song of innumerable accents. It€™s a vibrant symphony that brings unity from diversity.

We are a nation of laws, not of men. That€™s what sets us apart from the monarchies, dictatorships and democracies-in-name-only. Our Republic was founded to protect the weak from the strong, and to defend the rights of the individual in his person and property.

Americans remember where we came from, and so we€™re a merciful people. America is the land of second chances.

And so, if you sneaked into our great country€like a thief in the night€to take for yourself the benefits of citizenship without bearing the burdens that come with that high position, I have a message for you tonight.

On behalf of all legal U.S. citizens past, present and future, let me say this: €˜Get off of our land. Get out of our country. We€™re giving you a second chance to do the right thing.€™

If you have difficulty locating the exits, just ask any legal U.S. citizen and he€™ll show you the door. If you linger too long, you€™ll get an armed escort.

Once you have returned to your country of origin, you may apply to re-enter the United States legally.

It€™s inconvenient. It€™s slow. It will cost you. But as millions of naturalized citizens will tell you, it€™s worth the wait to wake up each morning, to take a deep breath of freedom, and to hold in your heart the meaning of that old song: €œThis is my country. Land of my choice.€

God bless you as you start your new life in the bright sunshine of legal freedom.

And God bless the United States of America.

What’s that you say?  That’s not the speech Bush gave?  Well, you’re right.  It’s the speech Scott Ott thinks Bush should have given.  And you know what, it is. Scott IS that good.  Can you hear me Josh Bolten?

    DJ,

Although I agree with Poli on the basic approach to boarder security, I cannot agree to destruction of our movement in order to stand for a “principle”. Can anyone there say Ross Perot? One of the things the libs do better than us is to think incrementally. You don’t always get everything you want now.

The Presidents’ speech wasn’t everything I would have liked, but some progress was made. I, for one, will continue my rant on the need for a real Wall, not a virtual wall. It worked for Israel and it will work for us. And at the same time, move our efforts positively toward future victories.

Have been since before it became a big issue of late. However, I’m for guest workers as well. What I want is the best of all worlds, people willing to work for low-wages if they want to, and keeping the thugs and drug dealers out. Not a lot to ask. However, the problem this issue has run into is the liberals have painted anyone wanting the wall as being purely isolationists. What Bush has failed to is to totally gut that perception they are painting. Scott Ott’s speech does that perfectly. It perfectly illustrates what I think most moderate conservatives want. Let them come here to work, and if we do, give them certain benefits. In exchange, make them PAY TAXES. The “illegal” part IMO is not the fact they are working here, it’s skirting the taxes. IF they pay for those services, let them have them. But, build the wall to stop what’s happening down there now.

Then, everyone is happy and the liberals don’t have a leg to stand on.
