Wonkette, you ignorant slut

On Friday (9/29/06), Wonkette ran a pretty stupid story titled “Michelle, You Ignorant Slut“. You just gotta read it. It’s so bad they deserve the hits. In essence, they criticized Michelle Malkin because she chastised today’s young girls ( Charlotte Church ) for dressing and acting like whores. So, Wonkette pulled out the “evidence” that Michelle was being hypocritical. This bombshell piece of evidence was Michelle in a bikini circa 1992. If that wasn’t stupid enough, they didn’t check too hard to see how accurate their “evidence” was. Turns out, it was a Photoshopped pic of someone else:
Now, not only is it not Michelle, it’s not even “bad”. What made it really stupid to me was they even “dated” the photo so we’d “know” it was a young “Michelle” when you can find that bikini at any Target ( see evidence on other sites ).
Now, where it gets REAL fun is when Gawker jumped in on the Wonkette “evidence”. You can’t read it now, they’ve pretty much trashed the post. But, it was funny.
But, what makes it precious now is that the person who originally posted the pics happens to now be a journalist at Townhall.com. And, Ashley Herzog is pissed. However, I think the conclusion that nothing will become of Gawker/Wonkette from them displaying in full view to the world how easily duped they are, is wrong. The next “innocent college girl” ( or anything else ) they decide to post on their site will be looked at with a certain amount of skepticism as to whether they put any more effort into making sure it’s right than they did with her. And, the online life of these ezines is very perilous and quite often short. Losing their credibility makes that online life even more perilous and quite often shorter. Whereas, Ashley Herzog’s going to be pissed for probably another fifty years.
I put my money on Ashley.
