The war on drugs - Shawn Bentler

"The War on drugs" has taken a lot of flack from the liberal left of late. While most of them are more than happy to prosecute the hell out of anyone that smokes tobacco, the efforts to combat the hardest drugs has been met with a lot of resistance of late. A lot of people seem to feel that doing drugs is a priviledge afforded by our right to pursue happiness. While making that argument, those same liberals will tell you we need to ban guns. That’s just fubar.
Allowing that liberal mantra to take hold is the rather blase attitude the conservatives have taken toward drugs while they focus on other issues such as same sex marriage and intelligent design. This is really starting to get on my nerves. Day after day it seems there is more and more evidence that drugs are destroying the fabric of this country while the people who should be leading the charge are playing Nero with distracting issues that really mean nothing to the average person. Drug addictions don’t limit their impact to same sex marriages. Drug addictions totally undermine the entire concept that our existance has anything to do with any intelligent design whatsoever. It’s crazy what’s going on, and people worrying about intelligent design in the midst of the craziness just makes it seem that much crazier.
Shawn Bentler took a gun and killed his mother, his father, and three sisters. He was arrested on an outstanding drug warrants. Now, the logic here is quite simple. If society had taken Shawn’s drug warrants more seriously and made sure he was in prison or forced rehab, five people, including three young girls, would not be dead in Iowa.
And, there’s no telling how many more people would not be dead at this time if the problem of drugs were taken more seriously. There are two other high-profile murders going on right now, anyone want to take a bet on whether drugs were involved in either of those? I’ll be following them here I’m sure.

Shawn Bentler’s family were my neighbors, I grew up with them. Shawn is two years older than me, he used to come by my home all the time because he was friends with my brother. Unbelieveable, and yet, I am going to say that drugs alone could not cause this disaster. My blessings for my community. Friends of the girls- I am so sorry for your loss.

Mental illness obviously had a lot to do with it. However, mental illness tends to seek out drugs, and vice versa. You won’t hear too many stories about the well-adjusted flipping totally out due to drugs, you usually hear of people with a mental problem going over-the-edge. That’s where my beef lies. Drug dealing doesn’t discriminate. Dealers don’t do psychological evaluations. The more likely someone is to get hooked, the happier the dealer is. IMO, Shawn probably had issues that required a lot of attention. The drugs just pushed him over the edge. In order to get people who take advantage of the Shawns off the streets, the war on drugs needs to be taken a lot more serious. IMO, whoever was supplying Shawn is more guilty of what happened than Shawn is and should face the same consequences and charges Shawn is ( or was, I haven’t kept up ).
That, I hope, we can agree on.

What an extremely narrow minded thought. No understanding of the underlying problem, just more oversimplification from someone whose answer is to lock up everyone that doesn’t agree with his position.

It’s not my position to lock anyone who disagrees with me. It’s my position to lock up parents and others who totally ignore their responsibilities and create a problem for society to deal with.
I’ve had to deal with those problems. I’ve also worked providing society’s efforts to deal with those problems. I’ve lost loved ones and friends to drugs. It’s overt, it’s obvious, and people like you just allow it to continue to suck away the resources our society could be using to provide services for the elderly, the handicapped, and those that truly NEED them.

Drugs did not cause this to happen, nor did mental illness, it was selfishness. He is the only one to blame. His family was very generous and gave him several chances. The kid was lazy and could not handle responsibility. There is no place that can rehabilitate his kind. He should not be locked up, he should be executed in the most horrific fashion!

The problem comes when your strung out on drugs, out of money, don’t like to work, and your dad is rich. Owning 2 companies, Mike and Sandra weren’t living in poverty as their son was. As a cumpulsive lier, he thought he could lie his way out. In the courts right now he might get off. And even if he doesn’t, the money of his parents may go to the soul heirs, his 2 kids he has out of wedlock from 2 different mothers. Get that!

What part of my post did I get wrong?
The “propaganda folks” are the ones I’m complaining about. Rock stars golirfy drugs, the media laughs off hollywood stars drug experiences and glorifies it to some degree. And, all you can do is call em a moron and blame it on “damn gossip”. The facts are Shawn Bentler was busted on drugs and facing charges. The facts are Shawn Bentler killed his family. So, what part did I get wrong here?
