In case you missed it, this week, there was a tragedy in Kansas. Ten thousand people died an entire town destroyed, the Democratic presidential candidate said Tuesday in a speech to 500 people packed into a sweltering Richmond art studio for a fundraiser

Turns out that the National Guard in Kansas only had 40 percent of its equipment and they are having to slow down the recovery process in Kansas, Obama said, his shirt sleeves rolled up and his head glistening with sweat.

10,000 people dead from a town of a town of 1,500 is a pretty amazing fact. The other amazing fact is that the National Guard only had 40 percent of its equipment to assist a town of 1,500. He acknowledged the obvious gaffe of 10,000 dead. He has not acknowledged that Governor Selenius has recanted the recovery slowdown as well.

And, what’s worse, I don’t think he will.

And people wonder why the president’s approval stays so low.

  • Volokh has a take on it. Basically Eugene understands the demands of campaigning and how it can easily lead to a mis-statement or two. However no other candidates have been given a pass for that reason, so why should Obama? After all, I do call this post a “Bushism” for that very reason. We don’t give candidates passes for saying dumb things. As demanding as a candidacy is, being President’s a lot worse. Therefore, as has been dutifully noted by the media, if a candidate ( Bush ), tends to do something as a seasoned candidate, he’s just as likely to do it as President. No passes here. I am smart enough to know that Obama knows there were not 10,000 killed in a town of 1,500. However, I am also smart enough to know that slips of the tongue distract from the message the President is trying to make ( see Bush ) and the media is more than happy to harp on the mistakes and ignore the message in the first place. So, no passes here.
