The debate started innocently enough, and I was fairly bored with it. It started something like this:

Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, wants to limit Pelosi’s travel to foreign countries through an amendment tacked onto an appropriations bill for the State Department and foreign operations. King sent out a release Thursday titled “Who will she meet next? Hezbollah? Hamas? Ahmadinejad?” in a request to lawmakers to support his amendment.

To which Nancy’s spokesperson, Nadeam Elshami replied:

“…..cheap political stunt that just won’t fly,”

OK, I can buy that. It does seem like a political stunt that I thought was an appropriate response to her cheap political stunt. However, Elshami couldn’t quit and had to add this:

……And why would anyone think it is responsible to restrict the ability of the speaker of the House to bring the concerns of the American people to foreign leaders? It is part of the speaker’s job.”

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

I’ll elaborate that a little more clearly.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

It is NOT the duty of the Speaker to present issues to foreign leaders. Wiki lays it out very simply, so I’ll use them:

The Speaker of the House does not normally personally preside over debates, instead delegating the duty to other members of Congress. Aside from duties relating to heading the House and the majority political party, the Speaker also performs administrative and procedural functions, and remains the Representative of his or her congressional district.

The ONLY duty the Speaker of the House has is to keep order in the House of Representatives. That’s it.

They are not a diplomat. They do not represent nor negotiate on behalf of the United States or its people. They call Congress to order an assure Parliamentary Procedure and Roberts Rules are followed.

That’s it.

For some reason Nadeam Elshami seems to have the roles of Speaker and President very confused.

And no one in the media seem willing to call him on it.

And while we’re at it, Elshami is also the person who stated it’s been a long standing policy that in the absence of a spouse children often fly in their place. Well, that is…….

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

And no one called him on that either.

And Elshami is the person who uttered these words:

“The president has made excessive use of signing statements and Congress is considering ways to respond to this executive-branch overreaching, Pelosi spokesman Nadeam Elshami said.

How do I put this. I’ll try it this way:

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

Let me explain it this way, the President is in charge of the Executive Branch, the House is part of the Legislative Branch. They are not the same. Signing Orders are simply how the President instructs the Executive Branch to operate. It is not the duty of Congress to instruct the President how he operates his staff. Once again, Elshami is more than eager for the Speaker to completely usurp the President’s authority as vested by the Constitution.

And no one called Elshami’s hand on that one either.

Whoever Elshami is, they seem to get a lot of their facts bad wrong and no one seems to care. That wouldn’t be so bad, but it kind of amazes me the spokesperson to the third most powerful person in our government is either so completely ignorant of the Constitution or just doesn’t care. Either way, they’re dangerous to me.

What’s even scarier about Nadeam Elshami? Try finding one single picture of them on the internet. Pretty creepy to me that a spokesperson can be so completely invisible. Gotta make ya wonder huh?

    you nailed it!

This guy has obiously never read the US Constitution.

I sent an email to my congressperson – Ms. Pelosi – tonight suggesting that she require her staff to read an actual copy of the Constitution and, while they’re at it, the Federalist Papers.

The LEFT has no idea what’s written in the Constitution. To them, it is a dead, obsolete document.

    Pretty scary, indeed.

Unfortunately, ignorance of the Constitution pervades society, not just the “left” or the “right.” Frankly, politics aside, its a symptom of our system of education…whatever happened to “good old Civics” classes?

  3. Moonage on 06.23.2007

It may be a symptom of our society, but we expect those who decide to take their career to a professional level to know more than the average rube. I personally expect those at the next level to surround themselves with people who know what they are doing. In this case, that obviously hasn’t happened. She’s got a hack for a spokesperson. When someone confronts Elshami the next they do something like that, they’ll embarrass the heck out of Pelosi. And, justifiably so. I just wish it could be me.

  4. Stormwarning on 06.24.2007

Pelosi is a hack who doesn’t know her role or place in Congress…I often wonder what would have happened if Marty Frost had gotten the leadership role insteand of Pelosi (I also wonder where her support base comes from). You’re very right on that one. And your expectations are justified. But society as a whole knows far too little of the history of our Nation.

  5. Moonage on 06.24.2007

That ignorance of how our government works is what allows Elshami and Pelosi to say and do the things they do and get away with it.

  6. Stormwarning on 06.24.2007

I agree with you. But ignorance of how our Government works, or of our Constitution, or of our country’s history, is a real failing of our educational system.

A Constitutional Crisis of Executive Proportions…

Aghast is the word to describe the inability of the man (or woman) on the street to understand how our government works, their lack of knowledge of the Constitution, or about historic facts. However, indescribable is the only word to…

How about not taking snippets of what people say and making judgments on them but actually putting into context where the quotes are coming from. That would be a novel idea, wouldn’t it? Maybe its not what you say that is important but what you do. But nobody cares anymore. Talk talk talk, thats all you guys do!

  10. Moonage on 07.11.2007

I do that by way of linking directly to the source of what they said. If you don’t want to follow those links, that’s your choice. But, don’t rush to judgment just because you don’t want to. There’s a ton of content in that post, I just don’t see the need to re-print all of it. What I do is take the relavent parts and expand on them, the rest is there in the links. I don’t hide anything, and I don’t take it out of context. In this situation, the snippets are all that’s needed as it fully explains the fact that Elshami either is completely ignorant of the US Constitution, or just flat out doesn’t care. Either way, they’re wrong, wrong, wrong. And rather than SOME people exploring why I say they’re wrong, they shoot the messenger because they don’t like the message. How’s about this novel idea, prove me wrong?

    Go ahead, make my day.

Talk about snippets, the other morning I was driving to work and had the local radio station playing. The local talk radio host was interviewing Jeff Birnbaum from Fox News and they were talking about Sheehan’s threat to run against Nancy Pelosi for her Congressional seat. These two idiots actually discussed the concept of Sheehan becoming Speaker of the House by defeating Pelosi in the Congressional race (yes, they were linking the Speaker’s position to the Congressional seat, and then debating it). They were serious. I heard it! I’ve seen no one else comment on this locally.

Ignorance of our Constitution and how our government works is rampant.

I mentioned it here I thought. Yes, I sure did:
    http://politics.moonagewebdream.com/2007/07/08/talk-about-a-no-win-election/

Basically my assumption is that Sheehan has pulled this threat before and it resulted in absolutely nothing. That I think is the prevailing sentiment with about 99% of the media. I think a lot of media as well feel Sheehan’s 15 minutes of fame have come and gone and all she is doing is suffering withdrawals and saying anything to keep her name in the news. This can get ugly. Some things are best left alone, and this I think will be one of those.

In order for Sheehan to have a fighthing chance against Pelosi, she would have to appeal to all the people she’s alienated over the last five years. She can never do that. The people who love Nancy are in the same boat with Sheehan. The only ones Sheehan would be appealing to would be the fringe of Nancy’s fringe core base. Most of those don’t vote in “protest” of the system in the first place. So, there’s really nothing to discuss. Sheehan will taunt Nancy as she did Diane and it will go nowhere. That’s just not much of a story for a reporter to debate.

Pelosi’s toadie, Elshami is a sham. He doesn’t know how the government works. But what does one expect from a liberal..he’s Muslim and that’s all that matters. And frankly, you are quite right.. no photos anywhere. It’s creepy as you said.
