This story has me somewhat perplexed:
NEWARK, Ohio — Central Ohio authorities have filed felony charges against a 15-year-old girl accused of taking nude cell phone photos of herself and sending them to high school classmates.
Police say the Newark Licking Valley student was arrested Friday and held over the weekend. On Monday, she entered denials to juvenile charges of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material and possession of criminal tools.
Illegal use of a minor? Now, how does a voluntary act a person does to themself constitute “illegal use”? This is just nuts. She has done something stupid that she’ll pretty much have to live with the rest of her life. She’ll be teased over it, depending on her life choices, possibly the rest of her life. No harm was done to anyone else that I am aware of. And, the way I understood most laws, there has to be a victim. Are they going to start punishing kids who pierce themselves with assault? This is just nuts, folks. And I guess I have to assume the “criminal tool” is her cell phone? Boy, there’s a slippery slope. And, it goes back to the wise old saying, you can’t make stupidity a crime. Kids do stupid things, that’s just part of growing up. I’m still paying for the consequences of my youth, as most people do. This girl is no different.
Now, I’m gonna assume there is more to this story than meets the eye. The press generally gets stories about 1/3 right. So, if anyone’s interested enough, they can contact the Licking County Ohio Prosecutor’s Office and see if they can get an idea of what is going on here. However, my gut feeling is that since this is a minor involved, they can’t divulge any more detail than what we’ve gotten so far.
I’m as hard on crime as you’ll find, but this just doesn’t smell right at all.
