“Two years ago, I criticized the Secretary of State for the firing of U.S. Ambassador to Armenia, John Evans, after he properly used the term ‘genocide’ to describe Turkey’s slaughter of thousands of Armenians starting in 1915. … as President I will recognize the Armenian Genocide.”

Sounds simple enough.  Sounds nice enough.  Only problem is it opens 95 year old wounds in Turkey.  Obama went to Turkey in April 2009.  He spoke of the events of 1915, but did not “recognize the Armenian Genocide”.  So, Howard Berman decided to hold Obama to his promise.

This will most likely be a difficult and painful process for the Turkish people, but at the end of the day, it will strengthen Turkish democracy and put the U.S.-Turkey relationship on a better footing..

I urge my colleagues to support this important resolution

In the midst of Obama literally begging countries to help him with sanctions against Iran, Howard Berman and 22 other committee members decided that it is more important that Turkey dwell on a painful part of their past, one that has nothing to do with the members of their government 95 years after the fact.

Obama, going totally against yet another campaign promise once he realized the shortsidedness of it, now has to deal with what he started.  He may not have wanted to open wounds that probably have alienated any chance of cooperation with Turkey in regards to Iran, since Turkey has now recalled their ambassador, but he has.  He’s now got to mend fences with Turkey in order to get them to help him deal with Iran.

Here are the idiots who think mincing definitions from an event 95 years ago is more important than the security of our children today with what might be some compelling reason why they might have voted the way they did:

Now it’s becoming clear.  At first I figured this wa yet another weepy socialist guilt trip where a bunch of spineless wimps felt compelled to blurt out the sins of others so that they might feel better about themselves.  But, only a few are members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.  Then I figured it must be a race thing, but, that didn’t pan out too well either.  I’ve never seen Barbara Lee or Keith Ellison concern themselves too much with the plight of white people in America.  And, this was about white people in Europe.  So, that didn’t really seem to fit.  The inverse of a bunch of white guys embarrassing Obama didn’t work either, as there are plenty of black votes.  Then it hit me, ANCA, the Armenian National Conference of America.  Apparently people of all color, ethnicity, background, and religion identify with the Armenians as 61% of the Pro votes were members of the Armenian National Conference.

OK, all sarcasm aside, this is a travesty.  First of all, it puts petty personal politics above national security.  We NEED Turkey in the worst possible way.  After Obama pissed off Poland and the Czech Republic, we needed Turkey.  Now, Turkey’s not to be relied upon either until we can figure some way to get them back.

Although Berman writes a letter explaining why he thinks Turkey should confess to sins of 95 years ago, what he doesn’t do is explain why he feels this in any is an issue the US government should be dealing with.  It’s not.  It’s none of the government’s damn business.  Someone needs to sit down with members of Congress and read them the rules of their job.  They need to understand that their job is to take care of the people of the United States of America.  And, that is, ONLY the people of the United States of America.  It is none of their damn business concerning themselves over how a country chooses to deal with events in THEIR past.  Parsing words over history is absolutely the stupidest thing a person can do.  The whole damn world knows what happened, including Turkey.  So, Berman et al on that list, do your damn job as it was defined in the job description.  Pay attention to the well-being of the people you work for and let the other governments of the world take care of theirs.  When someone dicks around with us, you guys do what it takes to make it right.  That’s it.

And, for the life of me, would someone please tell me why American Samoa is now dictating US world policy?  Yeah, American Samoa is the swing vote that alienated Turkey, probably killed the Iranian sanctions, very possibly stalled a revolution in Iran, and most likely enabled radical Muslims to develop nuclear missiles.  Either join the US and pay taxes, or get rid of those completely unConsitutional House seats.
