Cruel and unusual punishment?

Justice John Paul Stevens, a key vote in upholding the death penalty 30 years ago, now says he believes capital punishment is unconstitutional. He’s changed his mind over the years. I haven’t. What is cruel and unusual about punishing someone with the equivalent of the crime they committed?
